everytime i come i cry a tear (2012)

In 2012, Philip was awarded The Vanguard Award and a year’s residency with The Vanguard Court in London to explore the creation of new artwork under the name ‘Le Fil’. ‘Everytime I Come I Cry A Tear’ was the first multidisciplinary project created during this time. The project was inspired by a song of the same title that Philip had written, which was about coming out of a shell.

For the performance, Philip created a series of abstract ceramic sculptures. They were industrial black shells in a tear-shape, which housed many single pearls. The vessels were placed on several plinths and Philip was placed in the centre of this art installation. His ritualistic performance was an act of coming out of one’s shell, drawing the delicate pearl out of the brutalist shells.

This unique ceramics-music-performance crossover captivated audiences, and it was then exhibited as part of the 2012 London Design Festival.
