At Batley School of Art & Design, Philip began exploring the possibilities of everyday materials like cardboard to create sculpture. His work with card and paper won awards including the Leeds Metropolitan Design Champion Award in 2006.

Throughout his practice, Philip would return to using card and paper in imaginative ways to realise his ideas.
